Invest in Authentic Teachings

Introduction:  I had a gathering with a student whom is interested in learning. They were learning from someone whom made their own books and DVD Video's loaded with errors. They claim to invent their own approach to Qigong. The teacher on the video is very ill looking (grey hue) and has extreme Energy Congestion in their body. Their approach they pulled from a Teacher I know personally. To prove a point to the deluded  student I called the teacher and asked if this person ever studied with them. They said a resounding no! So this article is for the importance of honoring the indigenous teacher's who share their art and traditions with the public. The good news is I set it up for the student whom I had a meeting with to leave the Qigong marketer and train and live with a real master teacher! A success story of guiding someone to a source tradition.

True and effective Qigong, Tai Chi Chuan, and Martial Art Lineages requires physical personal instruction from a qualified master teacher. This is usually in the West someone whom has a link, a ongoing connection to the indigenous teachers of East Asia. All these practices are found in these many country's and all have their view teaching, as well how and why it works. One will need to sacrifice personal time and energy and receive one on one physical teaching for some time to learn correctly and be mentored.

In area's outside of East Asia it is very possible to have advanced practitioner's receive physical personal instruction from a qualified master teacher and are qualified in their own right. Such individual's has already embodied the teachings and, do not merely rely on instructions read in a instruction manual, or rely on archival video's for instruction.  This is not to condemn Instruction manuals, archival videos which are useful, but a qualified master teacher can turn the dead words and images into a living flowing transmission.

A instruction manual on its own only conveys  a prompt to the practice;  a partial truth – which is only the outer layer. The master teacher conveys the inherent truth and does not get stuck in outer layers, common knowledge or pointless aspects of some systems way of practicing. Many students who do not understand this reality, get disheartened and move from one system, teacher to the next, forever repeating their past mistakes and getting nowhere in their life path practice's.

What my indigenous master teacher's all agree on is true – there is no guarantee that a practitioner who does not have access to a qualified master teacher, will be able to convert the wisdom of the words in the book, or images from a archival video, into embodied skill in the real world. They need to lose self -righteousness and surrender to a teacher, a system so they can actually learn and grow into something. East Asian Traditions is unlike many other things and requires time, effort, patience and guidance. One is fooling themselves if they think they can figure it out on their own. How can one master something that they don't understand?

Copying movements and reading the words is one thing, while receiving the true significance of their meaning is quite another. A confused practitioner is like a blind person in practice, which will get you nowhere and be counter-productive to your learning and later if you guide new students. Likened with a blind person one needs personal assistance to finding their way in the beginning and later aspects in one journey.  A good Master teacher is also likened to a road map to get you to the destination faster. The confused or unclear  application of these arts and skills can cause more harm than good; heed attention to this warning. Study the Instruction books and archival videos; "yes", but seek out genuine instruction as well.  Avoid the self righteous Teachers whom made it up or develop their own technique.

Traditional Schools and authentic teachings will exist and forever to exist. Watch whom you let pollute your consciousness that tradition does not matter. I been in the practices since 1981 and can prove all my teachings and where they trace to. All the true master teachers are still around or have left it in great hands. Why waste your time with someone who's full hubris and are only on the path of self righteousness. Their practice and traditions in many way's don't resemble their teachers teachings as well a faint image of what could have been. There are many Qigong, Tai Chi and Martial Art paths in the world today, but the traditional schools and lineage Masters are renowned for its effectiveness and are very popular as a result within the community's.

Invest your time, energy and personal aspirations and connect to someone whom is willing to teach you. Do whatever it takes to train and learn from them. Yes you might have to travel spend money; and most likely some people are not use to spending extra money and making oneself uncomfortable. There is a old saying "he or she who pays; pays attention". Think about this 5,10 or 20 more years down the road do you want to have a life of regret?... or I was glad I took the time to truly learn? Don't become the "Would Have, Could Have, Should Have" people. A life of unfulfilled stuck remorse is sad; do something different go beyond  everyday average effort.

Chi Flow Way of Life

The benefits of Tai Chi and Qigong form practices are multi leveled. In this journal entry I will detail what I have seen personally teaching many clients, since the mid 1990's. These practices are built on the premise on the compliance of doing them. Don't become the teacher or practitioner of all talk and no action. You have to be diligent in practicing; to get the health benefits, and to take it to new heights. Like the picture I provided above  "We can open the door but you must enter".

As far as practices go it is very important to connect locally to a teacher of the community. The daily and nightly weekly classes and people that are in the community will be there for you day in; day out.  So what can Health and Wellness practices of the Chi Flow Way do for you? Read below:

As little as 15 minutes in the morning you can balance yourself for work. We warm up the body, then flow as little as four simple sequences. The nigh-time practice is generally a recovery one. Clean the stresses of the day and refine what you have before bedtime. The night-time practice is a little longer about 30-35 minutes.  For the everyday person it comes down simply to the morning charge up and night time recovery and balancing tradition.

In my classes I only teach two practices which are in depth. One practice in the morning to wake up and charge up and one at night, to find peace and tranquility.

These practices are the student that is: I work or go to school  40-60 hours per week, have a family. So you don't have to become a expert by any means to feel the results. A good Chi Flow exercise in most cases after about 5-7 minutes you should start opening up.

Hope you find this article to motivate you to enter into the "Chi Flow Way of Life", there are many teachers and approaches. Look for the teachers whom offer ongoing weekly classes, and have a genuine community practice in place.

Private Classes and Learning

The Multiple Benefits of Private Classes

Whether you are learning East Asian Healing Traditions for personal healing, fulfillment or just recreation, private lessons/classes greatly benefit the new student. So, why should one take private classes if one they can go to a community center? Learning to practice systems like Tai Chi Chuan, Qigong, Meditation and Martial Arts  can be more of a daunting adventure than one may expect. These type of classes are really kinda like a introduction; a overview or even a survey what the practice is about. It really cannot teach you the details you need to receive to improve dramatically better.

The group is important although for personal reasons you will meet people with like interest and you learn from practicing with different students. Sometimes you will hear questions being asked you might have never thought of as well. So if your goals are more driven than just the social side of it. A private class is how you will begin to sand away the rough edges.

Being a teacher and a student over many years I can say with clarity that proper instruction with one teacher is likened to mentoring in a trade. The teacher you study with has spent much time, effort and money to learn what they are teaching you. It is very common to have to pay for classes; this is how things are done. Everyone's time is valuable. Finally as a ending note here, not every teacher you find will be for you as well, it might take a couple before you find the one with a common likeness you both have.
The Teacher

A great teacher can eliminate much pain and suffering in getting to where you need to go to. They are likened to a clear map that gets you to the destination. Instruction in classes one on one will teach you understanding proper foundations, what proper practices are taught. Unique adjustments of how one moves, positions the hands, fingers, tongue, breathing, body, and receive from the teacher authentic reference material to follow.  This is some of the reasons that come into play with this foreign tradition that one will encounter. Below I discuss several reasons why it’s a benefit to take private classes.

1. Working in private classes can help one develop a pace in learning. Because of the many aspects of learning and practicing, both will have to come to a understanding on progress. There are many embedded skills, subtleties to practice that cannot be expanded on in a group class as well, or documented in any real written form. It has to be experienced and demonstrated as well with a teacher. If one doesn’t get help from a teacher, bad habits and unclear technique could become a road block to other facets of any of this in the future. Because everyone learns at a different pace, the pressure of learning in a community center setting can be very frustrating, which brings us to the second reason why private classes are beneficial:

2. Private Classes help to minimize personal frustration. I believe the less frustration the better when it comes to learning; who doesn’t? The expert teacher will provide the insider access to the practices, they will give what you really need. Though frustration can create desire and determination in some people, it can discourage others. It’s sad to see someone give up on learning Meditation, Tai Chi or Qigong in the early stages when all was needed was a little direct objective attention. Everyone deserves the opportunity to enjoy these traditions and not be frustrated with trying to find it.

3. Private Classes set one up for personal success for your ambitions. Mentoring with a teacher, one learns more directly on creating a personal practice routine, the fundamentals of a practice session in early stages. When a solid foundation is built, you can keep learning, practicing, and succeeding. Succeeding should be fun! As a side note if you are not enjoying yourself, and you find yourself in the enclave of no smiles then something is terribly wrong. Seriousness can be carried with joy which in many groups lacks quite a bit! A positive conducive learning experience builds confidence, and one doesn’t give up. Furthermore, once you are strong in tangible skills, you will see yourself excel much faster than ever before.

4. Most students lack how to really practice and get results on their own. All practitioners needs to learn how to practice. I often spend so much time, with student's on practice skills than anything else in a  private class; and not only with beginners, but advanced students as well. Many just don't invest the proper hours required in advancing. There is nothing new here its just like High School or College you will have to practice many hours per week. Unless you are just doing it for a social endeavor; then in that case you don't need private classes, cause you are not concerned with personal quality.

As practitioner's one will spend more time weekly alone somewhere than he/she does with their teacher each week; so that time must be well spent. You will need to become excellent in time management to integrate these practices in your life. After each class we send you away with the proper learning and practice skills, the private class teacher can help you get the most out of practice time alone. But you need to make it happen; if you are not practicing you are cheating oneself on so many levels. One will not learn each step of the way on any depth. Also, one will not dread the classes, practice time, because he/she will have control over it and confidently expect results; and it shows in dedicated students.

5. It is easier to stay motivated with the help of a mentor teacher and the private class students as well. The teacher also will generally have their own get together's for their students; and you will be aligned in great company of others learning the same teaching as well. I find this benefit most applicable to students who have been struggling for awhile trying to figure it out. Private get together's with common likeness students and teacher brings people together, makes things even more clear to everyone.

So down the road one will be out of the beginner stage of  learning what to do as well, but a student may not know what to do next. A private class teacher and training environment whom is knowledgeable about different traditions, practices and styles and can help you discover what is next to do, learn, what goal to pursue next. The teacher can supply in many cases a student with their systems books, booklets, archival video footage and audio recordings. This is important to help learn all there is to know on the view teachings as well. Sometimes all a student needs in order to remain stimulated and motivated on a basic level  is someone to be accountable to as well on a regular basis. It is always easier to work for something when you know someone is counting on you and that you’re accountable to someone – your teacher and tradition.

The Quest for Orthodox Taoist Tai Chi?

A local student came over to my studio, student seeking advice on looking for authentic Taoist Tai Chi Chuan. He has been a student of "Taoist Tai Chi Chuan Society" and is questioning what they do. Well... for starters I don't like playing policeman, on these types of subjects cause everyone can do what they do. I think if it is helping someone get better health and wellness then that is perfect. It really does not matter per se what is so called "authentic", because once it leaves China and comes here it is a adapted tradition. America the melting pot, not a exclusive one view collective consciousness culture by any means.

I am no stranger to this Tai Chi Association; I have taught many of their teacher's Qigong and Meditation, Energy Healing throughout the years here in Michigan and in Windsor Canada. Many of them do it privately in fear of reprisal from the group, but its cool I understand, there can be alot of politics even in Tai Chu Chuan Groups. Many come to me for supercharging their personal practice, or how to setup  personal shrine for the home. I never ask any questions about the group, or what they do...I do what I do and that's enough! Nobody appreciates a busy body gossiper.

Taoism & Quest for Orthodoxy

In Western Cultures there is a quest for creating fringe Taoist Society's. This is not the only group trying; there are many. The founder of the Taoist Tai Chi Society took up these practices to heal himself and he was successful. Today it really has evolved into a large network of groups worldwide. They even have a Taoist Temple in Canada. But is it true Taoist Tai Chi? Hmmmm read on (lol)

Truth is the form is a adapted version of the Traditional Yang Cheng Fu form of the Yang Tradition. We could say it is follows in the consciousness of  "Taoist Spirit" inspired and follows loosely Yang Family/Style structure. The form follows a nice easy flowing style just like the Yang's. It is not a well oiled performance form that just looks flawless, but it does flow for commoner use. They have the reasoning for how they perform the tradition. They are doing positive work for people and they generally offer the practice inexpensive or free.

Wutang Taoism  is the root of true Taoist Tai Chi Chuan. A tradition with many forms techniques, Martial Arts and Meditation Traditions and even Religious practice. Wutang Mountain is a large place with many Masters and teachers, and so there are countless variations. Wutang Tai Chi is not the easiest way to enter into Tai Chi, but it is the source tradition of Tai Chi Chuan as we know it. The smaller 13 forms are usually the ones people like for basic health routines, but it takes teachers willing to share with students. Many like the Chi Cultivation Meditations over the form, cause the practice works quite fast for stress and illness. Many seek Taoist Identity and like the religious tradition, and mentor under a real Master ordained in all of the Traditions. Taoism is a never ending study of the self and nature. Adopt the "forever a student" approach and be open to learn; work on yourself and you will go far.

Wu, Sun, Hao and many others are adapted largely from Yang Family. Yang Lu Chan was a genius with his technique and tradition and he became famous all through China. There are many variations of his teachings that even exist to this day that were birthed from his travels and teachings to his sons. The reason there are so many variations like many Master's he and his sons taught students based on ability and interest. Many teachers teach like this to remain open and to serve the many.

In the beginning Yang Lu Chan was a Chen Stylist in the beginning. The Chen Family is more closely to what Wutang Tai Chi Chuan is, but its more of a family style of Chen Family teachings. Even Chen Family Tai Chi Chuan has a wide array of teachings as well. So it is a endless sea of adaptations today. Each school and practice has their view point how to make their system work. All I will say is follow the ones that gives you desire to practice and joy when you do it. It will take a mentor in whatever Tai Chi Chuan tradition you do to ensure you do the form correctly and not to injure yourself through improper postures and movement.

Taoism in western cultures is complicated; it is complicated even in China. Daily life in China is not like it use to be before Mao Tse Tung and the Communist Red Flood. All the teachers I have ever studied with left cause of it. Taoism, Buddhism and other practice systems can no longer exist as it was. A sad true story to a once paradise on earth; but it don't matter cause it is omni present everywhere now. The traditions will go on and adapt. What was traditional may not be of value in the future anyhow.

Many act like they own some rights to the Tao; no one owns what cannot actually even be described; lol...Many get real political with Taoist practice, quest for making it a mission, the "Tao of Dollars" the marketing of Taoism which just really pisses off all the Orthodox Lineage Masters off. True Taoism follows the making the practices available to those in need and not with a recompense price-tag attached to it. This is done in Traditional Buddhism as well-all truths groups I will say. With that said this is the West- if you want your group to survive you will have to support the mission, nothing is free in America! Don't let a good thing die in the "spirit of self sacrifice" and a very Asian way of doing things.

The real Taoist experience is everyone's own experience. So again noone "owns the Tao"; feel free to tag it as such- its your life, live it as you see fit. I think if you like this Tai Chi Tradition follow it. The core philosophy behind any of these practices should be the emphasis of sharing for the masses and helping one another out. As Hua Ching Ni has taught for many years TAO=Together As One.

Qigong: A Branch of Chinese Medicine

Qigong: A Branch of Traditional Chinese Medicine

Recently I have encountered a influx of people seeking specific help with serious health challenges. In talking with them what comes up in the conversation is using Qigong forms, Meditations and Therapeutic practice for helping with what they are living daily with. Many are under the assumption that there are marketed Qigong practices for such disorders such as Asthma, Bronchitis, MS, ALS etc. What they don't understand is that there is not a "one fits all" Qigong practice for this or that.

What has made Qigong work is that it's basis is a branch of  Traditional Chinese Medicine; which has a methodology for correcting Health Challenges. So in this first of a series today I would like to address how I view this practice in relation to Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Qigong Group Classes and Self Practice Sets

We live in a culture now that anyone can try just about anything through a little effort. There is people filming Qigong practices and marketing them to promote their art. There are classes in most cities of some sort being held. When I began in this field it was largely held within the East Asian Community, and it was very closed to many westerners for the most part. I can remember a time when women were not allowed to participate in these classes and Martial Arts! Nowadays its almost the complete opposite, probably due to a generational change. Traditional Chinese Medicine and Martial Arts is also a world wide accepted tradition and not a underground movement as well. This is what is happening, the tradition is changing for the better; anyone can participate which makes it more richer of a tradition.

There are countless Qigong sets. In the 1980's when Qigong was first taking shape in the USA and in Canada, there were few traditions and teachers. The quality in many ways was better cause it focused on a more condensed approach and not a endless amount of practices, systems or approaches. Most of the Japanese and Chinese Masters I studied with required  you to memorize what you learned precisely. You would not progress to the next stages of training until you get did it almost flawlessly  what was taught.

What still is true today as was it was when I was just learning and understanding is that anything can make one "healthy & balanced". These practices that have been adapted from Traditional Chinese Culture practice systems, are for strengthening the body/mind. So Taiji sets, Stillness Qigong and Dynamic Qigong etc any can help an array of once thought of incurable disorders. What makes them effective is the mentor/therapist/teacher whom has a complete understanding of the tradition they are teaching. In many cases herbs are used along with bodywork, to assist in the flow of energy.

Qigong Group Classes and Self Practice Sets should always be accompanied by some sort of feedback from a experienced practitioner. Without proper mentoring, it is a Guessing game of what the set is suppose to lead one into. I often say "you must understand the view teaching" and all the salient elements with it. The videos used should also come from a source tradition teacher; often times today you see many promoting a "C" average copy of what their teacher sells as well.  I find that very funny cause why would they not promote their teachers video; really not a ethical display of character. In most cases the source tradition teacher should be the standard bearer of that given tradition, buy their video! At last count a friend of mine estimated there use to be like two standardized versions of Eight Brocades Qigong; now there is over 100 less than optimal adaptations of it. It has created complete confusion for many, which is a problem for the unknowing new student.

The videos that are often promoted is only a snapshot in time of what is - at that day and time; and should not reflect the totality of what the practice/tradition is. This is where classes and mentoring come into play. A teachers only job is to teach you to do; what they can do and to open your mind to the tradition and take it forward. Sadly often many teachings are partial and this is where sets don't deliver or work essentially, cause students don't have the insider details.

As far as healing disorders using Qigong Sets; there have been many sets to have beneficial uses for some forms of Cancer, MS, ALS and common miscellaneous disorders, diseases. A student really needs to establish a routine and understand the divisions of Qigong for Health and Wellness. What one can do essentially for Body/Mind Health daily.  Again anything can heal to make one whole. So its not black and white, and there is no Majikal Qigong set that can be boxed into this. What makes certain practices work is a complete understanding of the method from the Master teacher, which is often from a deep long line of lineage and history. So the teacher/therapist intuition on the practice is crucial in this case. The student following through with compliance of diligent practice as well.

  Identify Specifics of Disorders

Using Qigong for certain disorders come into play when one is actually sick or less than optimal. The Chinese view point of sickness is that when imbalance hits, the Chi is already in a bad state and should corrected and maintained quickly. One has to strike a balance with yin/yang very quickly. We often use terms like "finding the pattern" which is the total constellation of a persons signs and symptoms as gathered by traditional four identifications, including tongue and pulse signs. The Pattern Identification is the crucial work with helping one with Qigong and again herbs and Bodywork go hand in hand here as well as specific dietary requirements based on a complete look on ones health.

As far as classical illness/disease, this, is made up of a smaller group of symptoms which are believed to define that problem in many persons generically speaking with it. Such illness defining signs and symptoms are a illness of pathogenic signs and symptoms or those by which it is specifically known. Thus, while a illness/disease usually has a narrow definition of specific signs and symptoms, identifying and finding the pattern is the entire body/mind
composition of given individual. Standardized procedure is that a person needs to get into private therapy and get a Traditional Chinese Medicine intake done and then identify the pattern of imbalances of yin/yang, so balancing can begin to take place. This kind of Qigong Therapy is way different then generalized self practice Community Classes. Specifics are being addressed and in many cases Chinese external/internal herbs maybe administered as well. With this being said you will be guided hopefully precisely and completely into health and wellness of optimal health. I will also note that it can take some time as well; it will take a person determination, a strong will and compliance to do whatever the therapist is guiding one to do.

Qigong is a wonderful tradition; it is a branch of Chinese Medicine. It is a standardized approach; and in my opinion it is the best approach because it teaches the seeker how to maintain their health and does not become a therapist reliant tradition. The spirit of Chinese Medicine lays in the Mentor teaching the student how to adopt the teachings in their life and maintain health and wellness. I recommend to all my students and friends I meet that are looking for balance is to get to my private Chi studio and lets begin balancing the complicated health issues once and for all! This really is the proper way to work on personal health issues that may be plaguing one for a long time. I hope you have find this article of value; for people interested in Qigong its way deeper than a community event-it is Chinese Medicine.

Qigong Community, Mentorship and Practice is Essential

Wisdom on Qigong Practice
Since 1981 I have been involved in East Asian Traditions; what I have found with many is the following. People believe they have to practice many different practices/traditions and try and cram in other practices/traditions in their daily life. This usually cause alot of stress in ones life. If you are new start with ONE and do it for at least six to nine months, this is the benchmark for a beginning tradition.

As a teacher I teach a Morning and twilight tradition for people to get the basis of health and wellness. The morning practice should be dynamic, a great wake-uper to keep you nice and flexible and strong. This is also based on age groups and ability. The twilight or simply night time practice should be for entering into tranquility for anyone to bring back balance after a long day. I also educate my students in the many diverse categories for understanding what is involved in Qigong Health Traditions. The goal is to follow a Qigong Life Path.

The efficacy of ones health and wellness is not measured by how many Tai chi,  yoga sets, Qigong forms or knowledge one might think they know. It is measured by clarity and daily practice. Eventually it will become easier through follow through. Essential is being connected to a local group and tradition will motivate one to stay on the path of practice. This is essential you cannot do it alone. You meet new friends, share tips and learn alot from watching people. Qigong is interactive, requires people and what you participate in will actualize to a reality for you. Having local Qigong classes is a rare luxury that has not always been available; I can remember when it was a underground endeavor; pretty much handled within Chinese and Japanese Communities. So take advantage of real experiences shut the computers and silly cell phones off and live and experience life. Don't settle for lame experiences versus reeal memories with interesting like minded individuals.

I teach many and many don't take the opportunity to practice with me one on one and learn details. Many leave way to early from group classes and private mentoring and will hit a road block in practice, because they have not completed the training. The ones who come for mentoring really make jumps in their practice. They learn the complete practices and understand it completely and it become part of them.

You have to sacrifice time, money and effort to get anywhere in life, this is no different. In my Qigong traditions I teach success cannot be measured as well by simply the amount of time you practiced, rather by the quality of practice.  I always use the comparison of what it takes to master a good sauce or soup.  It takes practice, mentoring and personal repeated practice. Qigong practice is defined by sincere and sustained effort to practice regularly. Learning the way of Qigong Traditions is easy. The challenge many encounter is having a strong determination is to make their Qigong Life path part of their daily life routine.

The failure comes from making excuses to skip practice today, tomorrow and eventually nothing his week..then its dissolved into no practice routine. Make practice a priority, make a strong commitment to yourself and take it seriously. Eventually you will eliminate the luke warm practice schedule and it will naturally become part of your life.

Practice daily and do youre best!

Will the real Gary W Abersold, please stand up? ONLINE FRAUD ALERT!

So there is someone in India online using my name and likeness to promote Qigong, Zen, Chi and Yoga? This is why I titled this :Will the real Gary W Abersold, please stand up"? This is so weird and lame- cause how sad one must be not to be themselves. This came to light through a close student and friend, when these asked "when did I start teaching Yoga?" I was like I have no idea what you are talking about. So then they sent me http://www.taozenchi.com/ and I never laughed so hard cause its such crap-ola!

They have a facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/Taozenchi-Joga-972319209506506/
They have a twitter.com: https://twitter.com/Taozenchi
The main website:  http://www.taozenchi.com/

None of these are me; I don't own that domain name or associated with anyone in India whatsoever. This is the second time I have someone use elements of my likeness to promote  "Tao of dollars"--$$$$ for their Qigong endeavors. So please dont buy anything from them or support their scams!

The Internet is Filled With Frauds and Cons

If you are old enough to remember the original basis of the internet was to share information freely with one another. With anything good there will be the bad; cons, charlatans and frauds. So everyone has to be aware of this. Be careful what you post online, cause its all out there to see good guys and bad guys.

This is a prime example why I don't post personal information online or anything that can be manipulated and used for someone to profit on. The information on my site is provided to help educate people, share it freely and promotes the arts that brought such balance to me.

My students I teach whom participate in face to face classes learn authentically, and learn all their is to know in my personal experience- traditional lineage, view teachings and the in's and outs how, what or why the practices work.  It really gripes me that I had to post this article; but I felt compelled to fire back at these con's.

Sincerly,

The real Gary W. Abersold (lol)
